If you’re looking for something a little different, you’ve come to the right place. Our ‘Living Copper’ finish will change over time in unpredictable ways, depending on where it is and how you use it.

No two pieces are ever the same

As you use your Living Copper fixtures and they come into contact with water, their surface will start to oxidise. Gradually they’ll start to create a fascinating effect called a ‘patina’. This can be dark brown, black or, if you leave it long enough, even a beautiful turquoise colour.

Why we love copper

Copper has been used by humans for decorative and practical purposes for thousands of years. We see it in the world around us all the time on rooves, in wiring, plumbing, jewellery and pots and pans – even our bodies contain traces of copper. It’s essential to all living things.

Copper and copper alloys are also very hygienic. They’re naturally antimicrobial and are proven to reduce the spread of bacteria.

At Swadling, we use copper as a coating for our brassware. Sometimes we add other finishes on top, but many people choose it just as it is.

How to care for your Living Copper

It’s very hard to keep copper looking like new – but that’s exactly the point. You don’t want to. It’s a finish for those who will allow it to age and develop in its own unique and unpredictable way.

You should still clean it regularly, but just gently wipe it over with a damp, lint-free cloth and use another cloth to dry it thoroughly. This will prevent dirt and limescale building up, but won’t strip off the developing patina.

It’s best to avoid using any chemicals on or near your Living Copper fixtures. If you do spill soap, creams or toothpaste on them, just make sure you wipe them away quickly.

The film below shows some of the differences between Living Copper when it is brand new and how it might look once it has aged for a while.
